29 May Aberdeen High School SMA Mentor Program
Team OMNI’s Josh Bennett and Carl Quincy had the opportunity to mentor Mohammad, a student of the Science and Mathematics Academy at Aberdeen High School. They helped guide him through his capstone project in which he researched ransomware detection technologies.
This project detected ransomware through a Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TFIDF) algorithm and machine learning, leaving to question whether the method could accurately detect specific types of ransomware or malware. Mohammad found that the combination of different algorithms improved the accuracy of detection. He also found that working with behavioral data allowed for new ransomware types to be detected and that the continuous study of ransomware’s behavior increases detection.
